This summer Daniel and I decided to take a mini road trip to Hill Country for
some cave adventures. Our first stop was Gorman Falls at the Colorado Bend State
Park. It was an extremely hot three mile hike to the falls only to find out that
the recent drought had dried up every last drop. Fortunately, hidden behind
where the waterfall usually ran, there was a cave! It was such a welcomed
relief from the hot July sun before our hike back. Next stop was Longhorn
Caverns in Marble Falls. The guided tour took over an hour and a half and led us about a mile into the cave. Afterwards you can even purchase fossilized turtle poop!
Next on our list was Enchanted Rock in Llano. By far our favorite sight on this trip. They say that the magnetism of this giant granite formation eases the soul and restores the spirit and I have to say we agree. It's a straight uphill climb if you take the summit trail. You climb over 400 feet in just under a half a mile. Doing this in the 100 degree weather should, by all logic, wear you out. Yet when you get the top and stop to enjoy the view, you find yourself breathing normally. We were immediately ready to keep going into the caves surrounding the rock. We spent three days here exploring the trails and we can't wait to go back. After the enchanted portion of our vacation we headed out to Jacob's Well in Wimberley. This cave has long been filled with water creating a gorgeous and chillingly cold swimming hole. I would love to strap on some scuba gear and explore! On the way back into town from Jacob's Well was an endearing little family farm store. Inside was flowers, cokes, and handmade cheeses. Along with this signing instructing visitors to please respect the honor system and pay for what you take. I love knowing there are people who still trust strangers to do the right thing.
Last but not least was Hamilton Pool in Spicewood. Due to the drought this beautiful location was off limits beyond the perimeter walkways. I would have loved to see the waterfall when it's fully flowing though. Guess we will just have to go on vacation again soon!!
There is so much to do and see and photograph. How will we ever manage to capture it all?
